What a Washington professional engineer stamp is for
A Washington professional engineer stamp identifies the licensee responsible for engineering documents. WAC 196-23-020 covers final documents prepared for public filing, construction, agency approval or client use. Those documents need the responsible engineer’s seal, signature and signing date. Ordering a stamp supplies the personalized impression; it does not establish authority to practice or responsibility for another person’s work.
Washington also requires preliminary documents to be stamped. Mark them clearly as preliminary so they can be distinguished from final work; they need not carry a signature or date. This distinction matters when sending an early plan set for review.
The Washington engineer seal design
The board’s ordinary engineer illustration places your name above a circular design containing State of Washington, the Washington portrait, your certificate number and Registered Professional Engineer. Your name must match the wall certificate. The board permits any size that keeps the full impression legible; the product photograph is not a scale drawing.
This Washington PE stamp uses the ordinary professional engineer design. Civil, electrical and mechanical branch labels do not belong on it. The board separately permits a structural engineer designation for an engineer with the current Washington structural license. Our text preview helps you check your name and number; its caption identifies the portrait omitted from the preview.
The Trodat 4642 self-inking stamp
The Trodat 4642 has an internal pad for repeated stamping. The pad can be refilled or replaced, and the open base helps position the impression. Nonslip feet help keep the housing steady. The product-only views show the same black housing from different positions; they do not show your personalized stamp face.
The listed water-based ink does not dry on glossy paper or Mylar. Selecting a different color does not change that surface limitation. Choose a suitable document surface and keep the stamp under your control, as the board requires.
Ordering your Washington professional engineer seal
Set Qty, enter Registrant Name, then License Number, and choose Ink Color. Preserve any leading zeros. The digital-file option supplies JPG and PDF artwork. Refill ink, an extra pad and the pad-and-ink combination are independent choices; selecting both a combination and a separate supply orders both.
Add relevant Special Instructions and review the details, supplies, quantity and total. There is no engraving field for your signature, signing date or engineering discipline on this product. Apply signatures and dates to your documents as required, rather than treating them as part of the personalized order.
Electronic sealing and document responsibility
A Washington PE seal file supplies artwork, not digital-signature authentication. WAC 196-23-070 allows an original handwritten signature or its scanned representation when permanently applied by the licensee directly over the seal. Its separate digital-identification provision requires unique identity, independent verification, exclusive control and invalidation if the document changes.
For a final plan set, every page needs the responsible licensee’s seal, signature and date. Identify responsibility where several licensees contribute. Specifications have different treatment: the rule does not require stamping every specification page. Review the complete provisions for revisions, shared plans and reviews of another professional’s work.
Washington professional engineer stamp questions
- Does the PE stamp Washington engineers use have a fixed required diameter?
- The board permits any size that makes the required information fully legible. Neither the housing photograph nor the text preview establishes the finished impression’s measurement.
- Must I stamp preliminary Washington engineering documents?
- Yes. WAC 196-23-020(2) requires a stamp and a clear preliminary designation. A preliminary document need not be signed or dated; final documents require both.
- Can I add Civil or Mechanical to this Washington engineer seal?
- No. The board permits only Structural Engineer as a branch designation, for a currently licensed Washington structural engineer. This product uses the ordinary engineer design.
- Does the optional digital file include a verified digital signature?
- No. It is JPG and PDF seal artwork. Signature application and any digital authentication must separately satisfy WAC 196-23-070.
- Can one seal cover my engineering and land surveying licenses?
- No. The board says a professional engineer who is also a professional land surveyor must have a stamp for each license.
