What a Utah professional engineer stamp is for

A Utah professional engineer stamp identifies the licensed engineer whose name and number appear on the seal. Utah Code 58-22-601 requires professional engineers to have a seal, with its design and use established through the division’s rules. The stamp supplies the personalized impression; the professional remains responsible for applying it to the appropriate work and completing the signature and date.

Rule R156-22-601 covers final plans, specifications, reports, maps, sketches, surveys, drawings, documents and plats prepared by the licensee or under the licensee’s supervision. Owning a stamp does not grant a license or allow an engineer intern to seal documents. Subsection 2 expressly prohibits the use of a seal by someone using the professional engineer intern title.

The Utah engineer seal format

The rule calls for a circular seal with a diameter of at least 1½ inches. It includes your licensed name, license number, State of Utah and the appropriate professional title. This product uses Professional Engineer. A Professional Structural Engineer or Professional Land Surveyor seal carries a different title; those are not optional wording changes offered by this exact product form.

The product’s example places Professional Engineer around the top, Licensed above the number, State of Utah below it and the registrant’s name around the lower edge. The preview updates the name and number you enter. It is a visual check of those details; the finished layout follows the state format rather than the size of a circle displayed on your screen.

The Trodat 4642 is a round self-inking mount. This listing does not report its exact finished die diameter, so the product photograph is not presented as a scale drawing. The board’s minimum dimension and the housing model describe different things: one is the seal requirement and the other is the device that makes the impression.

Your Utah professional engineer stamp on the Trodat 4642

The Trodat 4642 carries an internal ink pad and returns the die to that pad between impressions. Its open base helps you position the stamp on the page. Nonslip rubber pads steady the housing, and the ink pad can be re-inked or replaced. The gallery’s product-only views show the housing, including its cap and rear view, separately from the in-hand photograph.

Choose the ink option you want in the order form. The supplied water-based ink is for suitable paper surfaces; the listing specifically says it will not dry on glossy paper or Mylar. A different ink choice does not turn this mount into a stamp for nonporous material. Use the matching refill and replacement pad options for this model when selecting supplies.

Ordering a PE stamp Utah engineers can personalize

Set Qty, enter License Number and then Registrant Name, and compare the preview with your Utah license. Keep the number in the format shown on your credential, including any leading zeros. Select one of the nine listed ink options: Black, Pink, Red, Purple, Blue, Orange, Green, Dry or Brown. Special Instructions accompanies the order if you need to include a note.

The optional Utah PE seal artwork, refill bottle, extra pad and pad-and-ink combination are independent checkboxes. The combination already includes both a pad and a bottle; choosing the separate supplies as well adds more items. The displayed total changes with the quantity and extras, so review that total and your selections before proceeding.

This Utah PE stamp is personalized with the two licensed identity fields offered for this exact product. The rule’s document signature and signing date are completed when you use the seal. They are not permanent fields engraved on this stamp, and buying the digital-file option does not add a signature to it.

Signing your Utah professional engineer seal and using digital files

Sign and date across the face of each seal imprint under R156-22-601(1)(c). Each original document set must, at a minimum, have the original seal imprint, original signature and date on its cover or title sheet. The rule separately says that specification sheets after the cover are not required to be sealed, signed and dated. Do not treat that specification-sheet provision as a blanket exception for every kind of document.

A Utah professional engineer stamp may produce a wet-ink impression; the rule also recognizes embossed and electronically produced seals. Electronically generated signatures are acceptable, and the licensee must provide adequate security when submitting documents with electronic seals and signatures. The optional JPG and PDF are seal artwork supplied after creation. They are not a secure signing system by themselves.

Copies of an original set are allowed when the seal, signature and date remain clearly recognizable. Check those three elements in the actual copy or electronic document you intend to submit, rather than assuming that a legible original guarantees a legible reproduction. The cited rule is the source for these responsibilities and the permitted sealing methods.

Utah professional engineer stamp questions

What size must a Utah professional engineer stamp be?
R156-22-601(1)(a) requires a circular seal at least 1½ inches in diameter and does not state a maximum. This exact product listing does not report the finished die measurement. The stamp’s housing photograph is not a measurement of the seal impression.
Do I need to register my Utah PE stamp with the division?
Utah DOPL’s engineering FAQ says a seal is required and does not need to be registered with the division. That does not remove your obligation to hold the applicable license or follow the seal-design, signature and document rules.
Can a professional engineer intern use this seal?
No. R156-22-601(2) prohibits a person who qualifies for and uses the professional engineer intern title from using a seal. Purchasing a personalized stamp does not authorize professional practice or document certification.
Does the digital-file option include a signed Utah engineering document?
No. It provides JPG and PDF seal artwork after creation. The professional must still complete the required signature and date and provide adequate security for submitted electronic seals and signatures. The artwork alone is not the completed certification.
Where do I put the signature and signing date?
Both go across the face of each seal imprint. The original set requires them with the original seal on at least its cover or title sheet. They are applied when you certify the document, rather than entered as permanent engraving details in this product’s form.
