Iowa professional engineer seal requirements

RuleIowa Engineering and Land Surveying Examining BoardStatus
Design and wordingSubstantially follow the board’s illustrated circular design, with the name and Iowa license number inside, Professional Engineer above and Iowa below. Licensed is optional; Registrant and Registered may not be printed on the seal (481—1050.1(1)–(2)).Verified
SizeThe reviewed rule and its illustration do not prescribe a numeric diameter. The finished impression size is not independently supplied by this exact listing (481—1050.1(1)).Verified
Seal typesA legible rubber stamp or other facsimile has the effect of the actual seal. Computer-generated seals may be used on final original documents (§542B.16(1); 481—1050.1(7)).Verified
Certification blockUse the prescribed engineering certification block on the first page or an attached cover sheet of an official submission. Identify each professional’s responsibility; a table may direct readers to contributing professionals’ separate blocks. Attach the submission together to establish its extent (481—1050.1(3)).Verified
Signature, date and inkEngineering documents need the responsible licensee’s signature, date, certification and legible Iowa seal. The rule specifies contrasting ink for the original signature and handwritten date; other block information is typed or legibly printed in permanent ink. It does not name one mandatory seal-ink color (§542B.16(2); 481—1050.1(4)).Verified
Electronic signatureA signature under Iowa Code chapter 554D must use a security procedure adequate to verify the signer and detect later changes or attempted changes. A JPG/PDF seal image alone does not provide that authentication (481—1050.1(8)).Verified
Drafts, revisions and custodyLabel nonfinal client or public-agency submissions Preliminary or Draft. Send revisions with certification blocks and seals establishing responsibility. The licensee remains responsible for custody and proper use of the seal (481—1050.1(3), (5)–(6)).Verified

Your Iowa professional engineer stamp

Your Iowa professional engineer stamp identifies the licensed professional responsible for engineering documents. This product places the Iowa engineer seal on a Trodat 4642 self-inking mount. Enter your name and license number, then select the ink and any matching supplies you need.

Iowa Code §542B.16 requires a licensed engineer to obtain the approved seal. Engineering documents also need a signature, date and certification of responsibility. The stamp provides the seal impression; it does not replace those separate certification steps or confer a license.

What the Iowa seal must show

The current rule is 481—1050.1. In June 2026, Iowa transferred the former 193C Chapter 6 into Chapter 1050. Its engineer illustration places the professional wording around the upper ring, Iowa below, and the licensed name and number in the center. The word Licensed is permitted but optional. Registered and Registrant are prohibited as printed seal wording.

This product uses Licensed Professional Engineer. The Registrant Name field collects your actual name to replace the sample placeholder. The reviewed rule does not state a numeric seal diameter, so a mounting model’s name should not be treated as a separate legal size requirement.

A self-inking mount for repeated use

The Trodat 4642 carries an internal ink pad, so a separately purchased external pad is not needed for ordinary stamping. Its open base helps you place the impression. The internal pad can be replaced or refilled with compatible ink when necessary.

Use the appropriate paper and ink together. The listing describes this water-based stamp as unsuitable for glossy paper and Mylar. Keep the stamp clean and protected, and keep control of your Iowa professional engineer seal; the rule makes its custody and proper use your responsibility.

Ordering your Iowa PE stamp

Choose the quantity, fill in Registrant Name and License Number, and check those details before continuing. Ink Color offers Black, Pink, Red, Purple, Blue, Orange, Green, Dry and Brown in the source order. A color choice does not replace the separate signature and document requirements.

The optional extras are a digital file in JPG and PDF formats, one-ounce refill ink, an extra replacement pad, and a pad-and-ink combination. Each is a separate checkbox. Review the running total, selected quantity and extras so you order the supplies you intend. Special Instructions can accompany the order, but they do not change the licensed professional category or create an additional product.

Certification and electronic sealing

The official submission needs the engineering certification block on its first page or attached cover sheet. The block identifies the responsible engineer, signature and date, license number, renewal year and covered pages. Contributors must be accounted for through their blocks or the permitted table identifying where those blocks appear. Bind or otherwise attach the pages to establish the complete submission.

A computer-generated Iowa PE seal may be used on final original documents. Electronic signatures must satisfy the rule’s security requirements, including verifying the signer and detecting later changes. The optional JPG/PDF file supplies seal artwork; it does not by itself implement a secure signature. Mark nonfinal submissions Preliminary or Draft and identify responsibility for later revisions.

Iowa professional engineer stamp questions

What should I check when buying a PE stamp Iowa engineers can use?
Check your Iowa licensed name and license number, the permitted professional wording, and the document’s certification requirements. This product uses the Licensed Professional Engineer layout on the Trodat 4642; a land surveyor seal is a different professional product.
Does my Iowa stamp print the renewal date?
The exact stamp form collects your name and license number. The renewal year belongs in the separate certification block shown in the rule, along with the signature, date and covered pages. Do not treat that document block as another engraved field on this product.
Is the digital file a secure electronic signature?
No. JPG and PDF are the supplied seal-artwork formats. The signer must separately use a security procedure meeting 481—1050.1(8), including identity verification and detection of document changes.
Do I need a separate ink pad for the Trodat 4642?
The self-inking mount has an internal pad. An extra pad or compatible refill ink is optional. Dry is an available order choice; select an inked color if you want that color supplied for ordinary stamping.
Does Iowa require black seal ink?
The reviewed sealing rule does not specify black as the required seal color. It separately addresses the original signature and handwritten date in contrasting ink and requires legible, permanent information in the certification block. Check the submission requirements that apply to your document.
