What an Alaska professional engineer stamp is for
An Alaska professional engineer stamp identifies the registrant responsible for engineering documents. Alaska Statute 08.48.221 requires sealing and signing when a registrant issues final drawings, specifications, surveys, plats, plates, reports or similar documents. The seal connects the work to your registration and professional responsibility. Purchasing a personalized stamp does not create a license, extend an expired registration or authorize you to take responsibility for work outside your qualifications.
The board’s current regulation limits sealing to work within your education, experience and registration, with direct professional knowledge and supervisory control. Where a document covers several fields of practice, the responsible registrants must identify the extent of their work. Your Alaska PE stamp is therefore an identification tool within a professional review process, not a substitute for that process.
This product is the Trodat 4642 with the ordinary Registered Professional Engineer design. Alaska uses a separate seal design for registered structural engineers, and significant-structure systems have specific structural-registration requirements. Do not treat the ordinary product as interchangeable with a structural engineer seal.
The Alaska engineer seal design and branch code
The authorized circular design contains State of Alaska, the 49th-state motif, your name, registration number and Registered Professional Engineer. The board’s illustration shows the engineering branch identifier before the number. The physical stamp uses that prescribed identity arrangement; a substantially similar electronic or digital representation is also permitted by 12 AAC 36.180.
For the number line, use the board’s two-letter engineering branch code followed by only the numeric portion of your registration. Civil uses CE, for example, so a numeric registration of 001234 can be shown as CE-001234. Do not add the registry prefix AELC to that numeric portion. The prefix identifies a record type; the engineering branch code identifies the licensed branch on the seal.
The ordinary branch identifiers are AG for agricultural, EC for chemical, CE for civil, CS for control systems, EE for electrical, EV for environmental, FP for fire protection, IN for industrial, ME for mechanical, MM for metallurgical and materials, EM for mining and mineral processing, NM for naval architecture and marine, NU for nuclear, and EP for petroleum. Use your actual board-authorized branch. Structural registration follows the separate design.
The reviewed regulation does not prescribe a numeric seal diameter. Board guidance says that the text must remain legible. The housing photograph and product capacity are not measurements of the finished personalized impression. Our typed-details preview helps check your entries; its caption makes clear that the final seal uses Alaska’s full 49th-state design.
The Trodat 4642 self-inking mount
The Trodat 4642 has an internal ink pad for repeated use. Its open base helps you position the impression, while nonslip feet help hold the housing steady. The pad is replaceable and refillable. The gallery’s product-only photographs show different views of this same black housing, including its lid and rear, rather than separate products or accessories automatically included with an order.
This Alaska professional engineer stamp uses the listed water-based ink. That ink does not dry on glossy paper or Mylar. A different ink color does not change this limitation. Select a document surface appropriate for the ink, and keep the stamp and any electronic seal files within the professional control required for their use.
Ordering your Alaska professional engineer stamp
Set Qty, then enter Registrant Name and License Number in that order. The number field carries your branch identifier and numeric license portion together; it is not a separate branch selector. Preserve meaningful leading zeros. Review both fields against your registration and the board’s branch-code table before choosing Ink Color. The options are Black, Pink, Red, Purple, Blue, Orange, Green, Dry and Brown.
You may include a Digital File in JPG and PDF formats. Refill ink, an Extra Pad and a Pad & Ink Combo are separate optional purchases. The combo contains a matching pad and a one-ounce bottle; selecting a combo and a separate pad or bottle orders both choices. Check the quantity and total so that the selected supplies match what you intend to buy.
Use Special Instructions for relevant order notes. This listing has no control for engraving a signature, a signing date or a license expiration date. Those omissions should not be filled by adding unrelated personalization to the name field. Sign and date documents under the board’s rules when using the completed stamp. An Alaska professional engineer seal supplies the personalized identity, while document authentication remains your responsibility.
Electronic sealing, signatures and document information
The optional Alaska PE seal artwork is not a digital-signature certificate. Under the current 12 AAC 36.185(f), a seal on a document is validated either with an original handwritten signature over each seal or with both an electronic image of the original handwritten signature and a digital signature. The image must be permanently placed directly over each seal. The accompanying digital signature must be unique, verifiable, exclusively controlled and linked so that changing the document invalidates it.
The signing date must be inserted within the seal or within two inches each time you sign and seal. It can be applied electronically or manually. A fixed date engraved into the order would not replace that repeated obligation. Likewise, an image of a handwritten signature on its own is not the complete electronic process specified by the current rule.
Documents requiring a signature and seal also need the business name, physical address, telephone number, project identification and location, plus the entity’s authorization number when applicable. Where several entities appear, identify the entity responsible for the work. These details belong on the project documents and are not additional stamp fields. The registrant or document owner must retain sealed documents so they remain accessible for later reference.
The board’s February 2024 guidance gives practical directions for plan sheets, preliminary work and registration-number formatting. The June 2026 statutes-and-regulations document contains the current controlling provisions used here. When older web guidance describes a different electronic-signature procedure, follow the current regulation. Review the cited provisions for the particular documents and professional responsibilities involved.
Alaska professional engineer stamp questions
- How do I enter the number for the PE stamp Alaska engineers use?
- Enter your board-authorized two-letter engineering branch code before the numeric part of your license, such as CE-001234. Preserve leading zeros and omit the registry’s alphabetic prefix. The License Number field carries this complete seal number line.
- Is a two-inch Alaska engineer seal mandatory?
- The reviewed current seal regulation gives the design without a numeric diameter. Board guidance requires legible text. This product page does not claim that housing capacity or the photo establishes the finished seal’s diameter.
- Can this ordinary product replace a structural engineer seal?
- No. Alaska provides a separate Registered Structural Engineer design. Documents about the structural systems of a significant structure must be sealed by a registered structural engineer under 12 AAC 36.185(i).
- Where do I date documents using my Alaska professional engineer stamp?
- Insert the date each time you sign and seal, either within the seal or within two inches of it. It may be added manually or electronically. There is no fixed signing-date engraving field on this listing.
- Does the optional digital file include signature authentication?
- No. It provides JPG and PDF seal artwork. The current electronic procedure separately requires the permanently affixed handwritten-signature image and a qualifying digital signature. The artwork alone does not supply those safeguards.
- Can I use an Alaska professional engineer stamp after registration expires?
- No. AS 08.48.221 prohibits affixing or permitting the seal and signature after the certificate expires. Possession of the physical stamp does not extend your authority to practice or seal documents.
